Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What tools do I need to gas weld aluminium?
-
Stainless steel or brass brush to clean the work
-
Contaminates.- (do not use this brush for any other work).
-
A gas torch eg. Propane, LPG, oxy-acetylene, MAPP.
Q. Is aluminum gas welding dangerous?
-
Wear safety glasses and protective clothing
-
Ensure good ventilation.
Q. What is the cost of gas weld aluminium welding rods?
-
Please click the "How to order" link for current prices.
Q. What is most important when gas welding aluminium?
-
Ensure all oxide and contaminates are removed with a stainless brush.
-
Warm the target to a sufficient temperature that willmelt the rod and move the melting rod over the join.
Q. Is gas welding aluminium easy to do?
-
Like all procedures it takes a little time to becomefamiliar with the process -View the video link for more
information.
Q. Is an aluminium gas weld strong?
-
The rods create a strong durable bond.
-
The weld is stronger than the aluminium
Q. Do I need to use flux with aluminium gas welding?
-
These rods require no flux.
Q. How thin can aluminium sheet be for a successful gas weld?
-
Use the rod as a thermometer or heat gauge.
-
The only variation is the amount of heat put into the base metal. The thickness of the base metal is irrelevant.
-
See video for welding thin aluminium cans .
Q. Can I gas weld at home?
-
Yes
Q. How to prepare aluminium for gas welding?
-
Remove any paint, oil, grease or dirt impregnated in the metal, eg a sump. Vinegar or muratic acid may work.
-
Remove any seals. You may angle grind or file.
-
Final cleaning is done with a dedicated stainless steel or brass brush. The metal should be shiny.
Q. What makes a successful aluminium gas weld.
-
Success is achieved when the clean base metal is hot enough to melt the rod (380C)
-
For cracks or broken pieces, tin both sides of the crack with the rod, then puddle in.
-
For holes, tin around the hole then puddle in.
-
See video for details.
Q Can die cast be welded?
-
Yes. Die cast comes is a variety of qualities from bellhousings to car door handles.
-
See brochure under Die Cast for details.
Q Can copper be repaired
-
Yes. Use the same technique as aluminium. Longer heating of the copper may be required.
-
Not suitable for plumbing.
Q Can brass be welded?
-
Yes. Use the same technique as aluminium. Longer heating may be required.
Q Can bronze be welded?
-
Yes. Use the same technique as aluminium. Longer heating may be required.
Q What metals will the rod not weld?
-
The rod will fuse with non-ferrous metals includingaluminium, die cast, copper, brass and bronze.
It will not fuse to any ferrous metal. This includes iron, cast iron or steel. If a magnet will stick to it, the rod will not.
Q Can galvanised steel be welded?
-
Yes. The coating, mainly zinc, will be fused. Not the steel.
Q Can zincalum be welded ?
-
Yes. The coating ,zinc and aluminium, will be fused. Not the steel.
Q Can models be welded?
-
Yes. Alloy in models is usually light guage.
Because the rod melts at such a low temperature, 380C, the metal will not be adversely affected.
See video for details.
